Redesigning Early Childhood Education

Working with a team of subject matter experts and key stakeholders in the community, Laura played a key role in reimagining the early childhood education (ECE) system in Washington, D.C. ― leading project management, research interviews, and co-creation sessions in English and Spanish, particularly with the local Hispanic community.

Project Overview

We first surfaced the voices of the community, and the redesign was driven by these lived experiences. From here, a shared definition of the community — educators, administrators, and families — was key. Leveraging the Double Diamond Framework and feedback from our interactive exhibition at the WeVision EarlyEd Conference, the design process focused on discovering and defining the system’s current reality, identifying the most impactful moments and opportunities for change, and designing solutions and tangible steps to systemically shift toward a more equitable future for ECE. Major project moments included:

  • Co-Creation Activities: Development of participant ideas and synthesize them into tools that enable participants to identify which ideas would drive the biggest systemic changes in the vision for childcare.

  • Futuristic Provocations: Use of feedback from co-creation activities and focus groups to create futuristic provocations built to push the boundaries of what it means to create a reimagined childcare system.

  • Conceptual Prototypes: Illustration of the transformative and tangible impact of the conceptual prototypes through storytelling, fictional scenarios, visuals, and key elements that represent the innovative elements of the conceptual prototypes.

Project Outcomes and Disclaimer

The conceptual prototypes for the newly imagined ECE system were shared through engagements with the broader childcare community, which gave rise to an exploration of tangible next steps.
